Partner Poses for Wedding Yoga

Wedding planning can feel like a whirlwind—exciting, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming. Amidst the guest lists, fittings, and family group chats, it’s easy to lose sight of the most important part: your connection with each other. Practicing yoga, but more importantly, practicing yoga TOGETHER promotes relaxation and strengthens connection. It can even add a playful, lighthearted element to your wedding journey.

I guide yoga and mediation practices leading up to and on the day of the wedding. Here are 5 poses I teach in almost every wedding yoga for partners practice.

5 Partner Yoga Poses for Engaged Couples

1. Back-to-Back Meditation + Twists

Purpose: Ground your breath and energy, then gently awaken the spine

How: Sit cross-legged, back-to-back, letting your spines support one another. Close your eyes and sync your breathing for 1–2 minutes. Then, both partners place their right hand on the opposite partner’s knee and twist to the right. Hold and breathe, then switch sides.

Perfect for centering before a wedding planning session or a deep conversation.

2. Partnered Chair Pose

Purpose: Builds strength, balance, and mutual trust

How: Stand facing each other and reach for and hold each other’s FOREARMS. Slowly bend your knees and sit back, using each other for support. Hold for 3–5 breaths, using your weight to support the other.

Perfect for practicing physical and emotional support—literally!

3. Child’s Pose & Fish Pose Combo

Purpose: Deep stretch and surrender for both partners

How: One partner moves into Child’s Pose (knees wide, forehead to mat), while the other gently reclines into a supported Fish Pose along their back—shoulder blades resting on the other’s back. Keep your feet on the floor and extend your arms open.

To release: The partner in child’s pose slides their hands underneath their shoulders and extends their arms to raise their torso. In turn, the partner in fish pose can sit up.

Now switch!

Perfect for surrender, softness, and learning how to hold and be held. It’s also a great hip opener!

4. Partnered Downward Dog

Purpose: Builds trust and balance; opens the shoulders and hamstrings. This pose will also test your communication and teamwork!

How: One partner (Partner A) begins in a standard downward-facing dog pose. The second partner (Partner B) stands in front of Partner A, positioning themselves inside of Partner A's forearms. Partner B then bends their knees and places their hands on the floor, a foot or so in front of Partner A's hands, mirroring the hand position of the first partner. Then Partner B gently lifts one foot at a time, placing them on Partner A's hips or upper back, depending on the desired stretch and comfort level.

To release: Partner B gently slides their legs off Parter A and gain their balance before standing up.

Perfect for building playful trust and shared movement.

5. Bridge & Supported Shoulder Stand
*Only attempt if you’re both comfortable with inversions. Use props or try a simpler version if needed.*

Purpose: Energizes the body and creates a heart-opening connection

How: Partner A (in bridge) starts by lying on their back, feet flat on the floor, knees bent, and arms by their sides. Partner B (shoulder stand) lies down with the upper back near Partner A's feet, knees bent and feet on the floor. Partner B lifts their legs, placing their feet on Partner A's thighs. Partner A lifts their hips up into bridge pose, keeping the feet grounded. This action then lifts Partner B's legs into a supported shoulder stand, using Partner A's thighs for support. Reach for (or towards) your partners hands.

Stay in the pose for several breaths, then release the pose by lowering back down to the ground and switch roles.

Perfect for energizing before your big day—or winding down a long one together.

Make It a Ritual

Practicing these poses once is lovely. However, making time for weekly partner yoga (even just 15 minutes!) can become a ritual that supports you far beyond your wedding day.

It’s a way to pause, check in, breathe together, and remember why you're doing all this planning in the first place: to build a life together.

Incorporating partner yoga into your wedding festivities is a wonderful way to pause amidst preparations, prioritize self-care, and connect with your partner. Whether as a pre-wedding ritual, a fun activity at the bachelorette party, or part of your big day, these poses can set the foundation for a marriage grounded in love and teamwork.

Try these partner poses, and let your journey into marriage begin with breath, balance, and joy!
