Ways to Personalize Your Wedding Ceremony

Many couples these days are moving their ceremonies out of houses of worship. The exciting thing about having a secular ceremony is that there are no rules! That can be both a blessing and a curse. Without a Priest, Rabbi or Imam expressing their procedures and allowances, the options are endless. That can either be freeing or overwhelming. Either way, secular ceremonies do not need to be cookie-cutter. Here are some ways to personalize your wedding ceremony, and make it feel unique to the two of you!

Choose Who Walks Down the Aisle or Stands with You

The way you use the aisle can be a creative opportunity. Being escorted down the aisle is traditional and for many it's an unspoken rule that a father walks his daughter down the aisle. However you can always choose another relative, and grooms, you can certainly get in on the tradition, too! If you're looking for a more modern option, you can always walk by yourself, or come to the altar together as a couple. It's also a personal decision to have a wedding or bridal party. Do you want all your friends standing with you during the ceremony? Or do you want it to be just you, your partner and your officiant? Feel free to discuss with your wedding planner or officiant, if you're not sure what's best for you!

Select Music for the Processional & Recessional

Music is a great way to set the mood and tone of your ceremony. You also have two great opportunities to personalize your ceremony as you process into your wedding ceremony, and as you recess at the end! Using classical music is the more traditional option, but you can always have string musicians play contemporary songs. Or is there a recorded song that has special meaning that is a favorite to you and your fiancé(e)? Whether you use live or recorded music, your choices have the ability to create a unique experience. Ask your DJ or musicians, if you don't know where to start!

Write Your Own Vows

Creating personalized vows allow those that are closest to you to see deeper into your relationship. Vows are not legally required in a ceremony, but they are usually the most personal part if you write them yourselves. What are some promises you want to publicly make to your partner? You certainly don't have to share everything. Feel free to reach out if you need guidance in crafting some meaningful vows. Or check out this blog post for assistance.

Design your Altar or Backdrop

Wedding ceremony backdrops don't have to be complicated to be stunning. It's also a visual way to share your personal style and set the mood of your wedding. To help you pick one that's foolproof, eye-catching, and appropriate for your venue and theme, work with your florist, designer or look for suggestions online!

Add a Reading or Blessing

Is there a poem or song lyric that expresses how you feel about each other? Will a piece of literature or scripture honor your culture or religion? If so, then add it to the ceremony. This is also a great way to have close friend or family member participate by asking them to read. It's your wedding, and should reflect who you are as a couple. However, if one of your older relatives requests a religious component, they could always add some traditional blessings. If you'd prefer to keep the ceremony secular, your wedding party or select guests can certainly share some wishes from them to you! Feel free to ask your family, friends or your officiant for suggestions!

There are tons of ways to personalize your wedding, but especially the ceremony. Are you doing something not on this list? What have you decided to add that makes the day feel unique to you? Feel free to share your comments below!
