Vendors I Love: CAREY MACARTHUR PHOTOGRAPHY
I was honored to work with Carey on an intimate elopement in December. She recommended me to the couple and for that I am forever grateful. As a collaborator she has a super easy demeanor. She focuses in on the emotions swirling around the couple and captures connection between with grace. She has an amazing eye and truly documents love with genuine care and excitement. Without further ado, I'd love to introduce you to CAREY MACARTHUR!
What was the path that led you to become a photographer?
I have a distinct memory of my dad handing me his camera when I was about twelve years old, maybe even younger, and something inside of me understood that photography was something I needed to do with my life. I begged my mom for photography classes, I went to the only high school in my area with a darkroom and eventually received my degree in Photography. The road to having a career in photography was a lot less straightforward. It required me to confront my fears of failure, my fears of success, and to be honest, acknowledge how the lack of women in the commercial photography field shaped my perception of what was possible for me. Representation matters.
What excites you about weddings?
Documenting two individuals who have come together in love is a pleasure beyond description. The love between a couple spills over everyone around them and fills a space with vibrant energy. For me a wedding day is a sequence of loving moments unfolding before my eyes. I'm blessed to experience so much love. It's like working in pool of happiness.
What do you look for in a couple?
I look for a natural ease and comfort between us, as well as an excitement for candid, artistic photography. I love genuine people who know how to have a good time!
What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?
When I'm not photographing weddings I take portraits of business owners and creatives. People come to photography with a lot of self judgement. My job is to connect with someone on a soul level, to see them for who they truly are and channel what I see into a photograph. When I can give someone a picture of themselves that allows them to acknowledge their beauty and feel a sense of pride in what they see, and perhaps even to see themselves in an entirely new light... well, it's a really moving experience on both sides.
What do you desire for your business?
Photography is my calling, but I've been delighted to learn that I love being a businesswoman. Starting my own business has opened my eyes to the realization that all of my wildest dreams actually can come true. My desire at the deepest level of my soul is to use my business as a means of spreading good in this world and as a tool to inspire people to live their dreams.
What are you grateful for?
I'm grateful for everyday that I get to wake up and call myself a photographer. It still gives me chills every time. I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to be an independent artist and I'm eternally grateful to my mother, who gave me everything and made all of this possible for me.
Any recent cause for celebration?
Yes! I recently rented my first studio space in Bushwick where I now work and offer portrait photography. It's the first step in expanding the physical footprint my business has in this world.
